IP Ratings

IP ratings, also known as Ingress Protection Marking, is a classification of the protection provided against intrusion of electrical equipment. It rates how well protected the equipment is against dust and liquids.



First Digit; Particles

  • IP0X - No Protection
  • IP1X - Protected against objects bigger than 50mm
  • IP2X - Protected against objects bigger than 12.5mm
  • IP3X - Protected against objects bigger than 2.5mm
  • IP4X - Protected against objects bigger than 1mm
  • IP5X - Protected against dust, but to ingress of dust
  • IP6X - Completely protected against dust

Second Digit; Liquids

  • IPX0 - No Protection
  • IPX1 - Protected against dripping water
  • IPX2 - Protected against dripping water when tilted at 15°
  • IPX3 - Protected against spraying water
  • IPX4 - Protected against splashes of water
  • IPX5 - Protected against jets of water
  • IPX6 - Protected against powerful jets of water
  • IPX7 - Protected against immersion, up to 1 meter in depth
  • IPX8 - Protected against immersion, 1 meter in depth or more
